Teaching with Comprehensible Input (TCI) is an approach to second language acquisition (SLA) which is based on contemporary SLA research. The keynote presentation will delve into what Teaching with Comprehensible Input (TCI) is, explain how it is being implemented in classrooms in a Queensland high school, and the results that are being obtained with the school's Years 7-9 students. Sharon Brissoni presented the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP®) Model, which was developed to make content material comprehensible to English Language Learners. This model is the result of the work of Jana Echevarria, MaryEllen Vogt and Deborah J. Short. It is used in bilingual settings across the United States. As a framework for organizing instruction, The SIOP® Model supports teachers in planning and delivering high-quality instruction for all students. There are eight interrelated components in the Model:
- Lesson preparation
- Building background
- Comprehensible input
- Strategies
- Interaction
- Practice and Application
- Lesson delivery
- review and assessment
Anissa Jones (Google Certified Educator) facilitated two workshops on:
- Formative and Summative Assessment using GAFE Tools
- Using MyMaps & Tour Builder in the Languages Classroom

The Committee of the MLTA ACT Inc. are pleased to announced that the MLTA ACT Inc. is a TQI Recognised Provider of Professional Learning. We are extremely happy to also inform you that the Mini-Conference held on Saturday 23 August has received approval from TQI.If you attended the Mini-Conference your attendance has been verified and the Professional Learning should appear on your TQI Portal as 'MLTA ACT Inc. Mini-Conference 23 August 2014'.
You will need complete an online reflection. To do this you will need to log on to the TQI website and enter the TQI Portal, click on the Professional Learning tab and then enter My PL Profile. The Mini-Conference should appear under the Accredited Programs section.
If the program has not appeared in the Accredited Program section of your PL Profile then you will need to let Veronique Canellas ( veronique.canellas@ed.act.edu.au ) know as some TQI numbers for members were not able to be verified on the TQI Website (Around 4 members in total). This means that you may have written the incorrect TQI number on the sign on sheet and/or did not write the same surname as listed on your TQI card.

- Scootle Community is an information and interaction channel for teachers. Developed in collaboration with the Australian teaching profession, Scootle Community is a private space for teachers to give and receive advice and information online. Scootle Community has the capacity to link to every teacher in the nation in a professional digital community.
- As one of the Teachers Champions selected to develop and promote the Scootle Community, Myriam will show you how the Scootle Community works and how you can help build a national teaching community.
- Leanne's year 4 students, learning German at Mount Rogers Primary School, explored the European history of writing, using the CLIL approach.
- She also developed a CLIL based programming template that includes links to the Australian Curriculum: Languages.

11:30 Why not the museum or the zoo - Heike Craig
- There are many opportunities for authentic learning in Canberra. These include museums, galleries and embassies.
- Heike will give examples of how to utilise what is on offer and use the target language as part of the experience.

The welcome cocktail party was at the National Portrait Gallery with a private viewing of the exhibition of portraits before the cocktail.
