Teaching with Comprehensible Input (TCI) is an approach to second language acquisition (SLA) which is based on contemporary SLA research. The keynote presentation will delve into what Teaching with Comprehensible Input (TCI) is, explain how it is being implemented in classrooms in a Queensland high school, and the results that are being obtained with the school's Years 7-9 students. Sharon Brissoni presented the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP®) Model, which was developed to make content material comprehensible to English Language Learners. This model is the result of the work of Jana Echevarria, MaryEllen Vogt and Deborah J. Short. It is used in bilingual settings across the United States. As a framework for organizing instruction, The SIOP® Model supports teachers in planning and delivering high-quality instruction for all students. There are eight interrelated components in the Model:
  1. Lesson preparation
  2. Building background
  3. Comprehensible input
  4. Strategies
  5. Interaction
  6. Practice and Application
  7. Lesson delivery
  8. review and assessment

Conference accreditation 2014

The Committee of the MLTA ACT Inc. are pleased to announced that the MLTA ACT Inc. is a TQI Recognised Provider of Professional Learning. We are extremely happy to also inform you that the Mini-Conference held on Saturday 23 August has received approval from TQI.

If you attended the Mini-Conference your attendance has been verified and the Professional Learning should appear on your TQI Portal as 'MLTA ACT Inc. Mini-Conference 23 August 2014'.

You will need complete an online reflection. To do this you will need to log on to the TQI website and enter the TQI Portal, click on the Professional Learning tab and then enter My PL Profile. The Mini-Conference should appear under the Accredited Programs section.

If the program has not appeared in the Accredited Program section of your PL Profile then you will need to let Veronique Canellas ( veronique.canellas@ed.act.edu.au ) know as some TQI numbers for members were not able to be verified on the TQI Website (Around 4 members in total). This means that you may have written the incorrect TQI number on the sign on sheet and/or did not write the same surname as listed on your TQI card.

AFMLTA National Conference, Canberra 2013

The biennial national conference of the Australian Federation of Modern Language Teachers' Associations (AFMLTA) was held in Canberra to coincide with the Centenary of Canberra. The foundation stone of the city was laid when Canberra was named as the future Australian capital in 1913. The Australian Parliament moved to Canberra in 1927.

Venue: Australian National University

Dates: Friday 5 July to Monday 8 July 2013

Venue

Most of the conference events took place at the Australian National University. The conference dinner was in the Great Hall at University House, ANU. The welcome cocktail party was at the National Portrait Gallery with a private viewing of the exhibition of portraits before the cocktail. The main venue was the Manning Clark Conference Centre, ANU.
